Biography


Luca Brocca was born in Genoa, Italy, in 1978. He received the M.Sc. degree in Environmental Engineering and the Ph.D. degree (the Ph.D. thesis, in Italian, can be downloaded here) in Civil Engineering, both with excellence, from the University of Perugia, Italy, in 2003 and 2008, respectively. Since 2003 he received a Scholarship and, successively, a Research Fellowship to carry research at the Research Institute of Geo-Hydrological Protection (IRPI) of the National Research Council (CNR) of Perugia (Italy). Since 2009 he is a Researcher at CNR-IRPI.

He has been author and co-author of 79 (+10 submitted) journal referred papers (1790 citations, H-index=20 with SCOPUS; 2710 citations, H-index=25 with SCHOLAR - September 2016) and 75 papers in peer-reviewed conference proceedings/book chapters. He has held +40 presentations at conference and workshops (13 as invited speaker), he served as chairman at EGU, ERB and PLINIUS conferences, and he participated to several seminars held by Italian and foreign professors. He serves as frequent reviewer for several (+35) international journals (see PUBLONS for details) and organisations (USDA, EUMETSAT, BELSPO, FWO, Swiss National Science Foundation, Czech Science Foundation, CRC). He acts as Associate Editor for "Geoderma" and "Hydrology" journals and as Guest Editor for special issues on "Hydrology Research", "Vadose Zone Journal", "Advances in Meteorology", and "Hydrology". He actively participated to several research project in the frame of Italian and European programs (LIFE+, HORIZON2020), and funded by Space Agencies (ESA, EUMETSAT), in collaboration with Italian and international institutions. In particular, in the period January-July 2010 he carried out an Associated Scientist activity, and currently he is involved, under the project "Satellite Application Facility on Support to Operational Hydrology and Water Management (H-SAF)" by EUMETSAT. He is Co-investigator in the agreement between H-SAF and GPM (Global Precipitation Measurement) mission by NASA, he is Early Adopter of the SMAP (Soil Moisture Active and Passive) mission by NASA, and he actively participates to the project "Climate Change Initiative - Soil Moisture" by ESA. He is currently involved in "SMOS+rainfall" and "WACMOS-MED" projects by ESA and in projects for the operational use of satellite soil moisture data for flood and landslide mitigation funded by the Italian National Department of Civil Protection (DPC) and the Umbria Region Civil Protection Centre (CFD).

He is the Italian National Correspondent of the Euromediterranean network of Experimental and Representative Basins (ERB) and he is a member of the MOXXI working group of International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS), the Italian Hydrological Society (IHS), the Italian Group of Hydraulics (GII), the international Environmental Modelling and Software society (iEMSs) and the European Geophysical Union (EGU).

SM2RAIN (Matlab code, Global Rainfall Datasets) --> SM2RAIN PAPERs LIST

SM2RAIN is a simple algorithm for estimating rainfall from soil moisture data.

The SM2RAIN code is freely available and can be downloaded here. The code is written in the MATLAB® programming language and is fully commented. The description of the method and of its performance can be found in Brocca et al. (2013). Three rainfall products obtained from satellite soil moisture data through the SM2RAIN algorithm have been delivered by Brocca et al. (2014). Rainfall data have daily temporal resolution, 1-degree spatial resolution and are available for the period 2007-2012. These datasets can be downloaded here. A NEW GLOBAL SCALE RAINFALL PRODUCT at 0.5 degree/daily spatial-temporal resolution has been delivered (period from January 2007 to June 2015, 8.5 years). New datasets with finer spatial resolution (0.25°, 12.5 km) are also available on a global scale, in EUROPE and in ITALY. All SM2RAN datasets are freely available, contact us for details.

Here you can find two TALKS (EGU 2015 - CCI 2014 ) and a POSTER showing the latest results with the applications of SM2RAIN. In the paper by Massari et al. (2014) it is shown that SM2RAIN-derived rainfall from in-situ soil moisture observations even improves flood modelling (see also here, Italian media). In this paper by Brocca et al. (2015) the application of SM2RAIN to synthetic and in situ observations at several sites in Europe further underlines the robustness of the method. In Ciabatta et al. (2015) the integration of SM2RAIN with state-of-the-art products has provided significant improvements for rainfall estimation over the whole Italian territory. Here applications of SM2RAIN in Mexico and in the Tibet Pleateau. New results on SM2RAIN have been presented at ESA-SCAT conference, with its advanced application to QUIKSCAT, RAPIDSCAT, OSCAT, AMSR2, SMOS, and SMAP.

Below an example of the correlation maps obtained with the new SM2RAIN-ASCAT dataset (bottom left) with respect to the first version published on JGR (Brocca et al., 2014, top left). The benchmark is the GPCC Full Data Daily Product and the correlations are computed for 5-day accumulated rainfall. The improvements with the latest version of the rainfall product are significant worldwide.
On the right, the integration of top down (GPM late run) and bottom up (SM2RAIN-ASCAT) rainfall products is shown for estimating daily rainfall in central Italy. The integration provides a correlation of 0.874 for the GPM+SM2RAIN-ASCAT products!

MISDc Rainfall-Runoff Model (and MILc)

A continuous rainfall-runoff model named MISDc ("Modello Idrologico SemiDistribuito in continuo") for flood prediction and forecasting was developed by myself (in collaboration with my colleagues); it is freely available and can be downloaded here. The code is written in the MATLAB® programming language and is fully commented; an executable version of the model is also available contacting myself. The description of the model structure and of its performance can be found in Brocca et al. (2010) and Brocca et al. (2011). Additionally, a fully continuous and lumped version of the MISDc model, called MILc ("Modello Idrologico Lumped in continuo") was made freely available here. The references for the model description and application are Brocca et al. (2011) and Brocca et al. (2013).

Soil Moisture Model

A continuous soil water balance model for the simulation of soil moisture temporal evolution was developed by myself (in collaboration with my colleagues); it is freely available and can be downloaded here. The code is written in the MATLAB® programming language and is fully commented. The description of the model structure and of its performance can be found in Brocca et al. (2008).

Neyman-Scott Rectangular Pulse Model

The Neyman-Scott Rectangular Pulse (NSRP) model for the generation of synthetic rainfall data was made freely available here. The code is written in the MATLAB® programming language and is fully commented. The description of the model structure and of its performance can be found in Camici et al. (2011), Tarpanelli et al. (2012) and Brocca et al. (2013).

Fractionally differenced ARIMA model (FARIMA)

The Fractionally differenced ARIMA model (FARIMA) model for the generation of synthetic temperature data was made freely available here. The code is written in the MATLAB® programming language and is fully commented. The description of the model structure and of its performance can be found in Camici et al. (2011).

Satellite vs in situ soil moisture observations

A simple code for the comparison of in situ and satellite soil moisture observations can be downloaded here. It performs: 1) Temporal co-location, 2) Exponential Filter (Soil Water Index), and 3) CDF matching. The code is written in the MATLAB® programming language and is fully commented. The description of the algorithm can be found in Brocca et al. (2011), Lacava et al. (2012).

Long-term (1989-2012) soil moisture data set

A long-term (1989-2012) hourly soil moisture data set was developed by applying the Soil Moisture Model to distributed in situ observations carried out in central Italy (Brocca et al., 2012). The data set can be freely downloaded here, more information on the procedure used for developing the data set can be found in Brocca et al. (2013).
